Workplace Health & Safety Update

New harmonised Work Health and Safety legislation commenced in South Australia and Tasmania on 1 January 2013.

This brings these states in line with Queensland, NSW, NT, ACT and the Commonwealth jurisdictions where the new laws have already been implemented. 

Safework SA provides updated fact sheets and resources to assist employers understand the changes. Businesses can also access a summary presentation which highlights the key changes. Some requirements in the regulations will have transitional periods to provide businesses with time to prepare.

Victoria and Western Australia have yet to adopt the model laws, though Western Australia says they are still committed to the process.

It is important for all business operating in South Australia and Tasmania to re-examine their workplace health and safety policies and update them and any other relevant documents with the new laws.
