Paternity Leave Pay

'Dad and Partner Pay' will be available from 1 January 2013 to those eligible when they take time off for the birth or adoption of their child.

From 1 January 2013, eligible Dads and Partners will receive two weeks' government funded parental leave pay when they take time off for the birth or adoption of their child.

An amendment to the Parental Leave Act was passed in late June, to provide ‘Dad and Partner Pay’ to eligible fathers and partners, including adopting parents and parents in same-sex couples who earned less than $150,000 in the previous financial year.

To be eligible, the Dad or Partner must have worked at least 330 hours, or more than one day a week, in 10 of the 13 months before the birth of the baby. It will be available to full-time, part-time, casual, seasonal, contract and self-employed workers. The payment will only go to partners who are on unpaid leave and who do not work during the two week period.

A reprieve for employers is that the two weeks of paternity leave pay will be distributed through the Family Assistance Office. It’s important for employers to note that this is not additional leave to the three weeks' unpaid leave Dads and partners currently receive, but a payment of two weeks' pay.
