Social networks are one of the fastest growing areas in modern communications and include networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn; microblogs such as Twitter; videosharing sites eg You Tube and other forums and discussion boards.
A recent decision of Fair Work Australia is a reminder to both employers and employees about the issues associated with the use of social media, especially outside working hours. In the decision, Commissioner Bissett of FWA cautioned:
"A Facebook posting, while initially undertaken outside working hours, does not stop once work recommences. … It would be foolish of employees to think they may say as they wish on their Facebook page with total immunity from any consequences."
Key considerations for employers:
- Have you a social media policy in place separate to your email and internet policy?
- Does your policy cover business use and personal use of social media?
- Have you communicated this to all your staff?
