3 months until Christmas!

Just remember you must provide notice of a shutdown, at a minimum, of 1 month. However, be aware, that some Awards require employers to provide 2 months’ notice, such as the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2010. So check your relevant Awards or Agreement to see if a notice period is stipulated.

If the Christmas & New Year period is a quiet time for your organisation, it is good practice to utilise an annual closedown period and have your employees take paid leave; refresh and revive; with the added benefit of reducing your organisation's liabilities.

As each state differs slightly in their designated public holidays over this period, be sure to check which days are public holidays in your state.

Subscribers to Your HRdocs can download a Christmas Shutdown Template Letter advising employees of the shutdown period.
